Alzheimer's Disease and Insulin Relationship: Type 3 DiabetesEzgi Akar1, Mehtap Kaçar21Department of Neurosurgery, Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital; Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine, Neuroscience Phd Student, Istanbul, Türkiye2Department of Physiology, Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine; Department of Pathophysiology, Yeditepe University Graduate School of Health Sciences, Istanbul, Türkiye Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that occurs with advancing age and is characterized by progressive dementia and neural degeneration. In recent years, it has been stated that insulin deficiency and insulin resistance are associated with neurodegenerative processes in Alzheimer’s disease. It has been supported by many recent studies that a decrease in the amount of brain insulin and insulin resistance has a role in the accumulation of amyloid beta and hyperphosphorylated tau protein, which are held responsible for the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease and reduces synaptic pilasticity. For this reason, the definition of Type III diabetes has been used for Alzheimer’s disease in recent years and has brought a new perspective to the pathogenesis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. In this study, we aimed to discuss the role of insulin deficiency and insulin resistance in Alzheimer’s etiopathogenesis. For this purpose, current articles related to Alzheimer’s and Type III diabetes have been reviewed. Keywords: Alzheimer’s disease, Insulin resistance, Type-3-diabetes.Ezgi Akar, Mehtap Kaçar.
