Elderly People in Covid-19 OutbreakZeynep AltınUniversity Of Health Sciences, Tepecik Training And Research Hospital, Department Of Internal Medicine, IzmirCovid-19 infection which affects the whole world was accepted as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020. The Covid-19 outbreak has caused millions of people to become infected and a large number of people to die across the world. The high morbidity and mortality rates of Covid-19 among older adults have been widely took place both in press and social media. Governments around the world have emphasized age in their declarations and therefore created an environment that lays the ground for elder discrimination. Although studies in the field of geriatrics are increasing, age-based discrimination is still common in societies. While protecting the elderly from the negative effects of the pandemic, it is necessary to respect and support them in this emergency and unusual situation. In some cases, it can be seen that the pandemic exerts pressure on the health system and the available resources are not sufficient to deal with all medical requirements. It should be remembered that older age may be a risk factor in these cases. But the more important thing is; to ensure that all elderly people are treated with respect and dignity even at these times. With this article, it is aimed to discuss the age factor and intervention areas in pandemic triage and other risky situations in the elderly people who are among the disadvantaged groups of society, during the Covid-19 pandemic period.
